The Story

Sometimes you just need a win, and sometimes they come in unexpected ways. Shot in the fall of 2020, “Break On Through” came at a time when people were beginning to crawl out from under the initial wave of COVID-19. I had spent the majority of the year at home with an infant, waiting for the chance to resume studio work. Shooting landscapes felt like a distant memory. In fact, it was only a photo walk near my house that got me out the door that day, and even then I only had plans to say hi to a few people and return home. Shouldering the camera bag as I stepped outside felt more like ceremony than preparation, as I had no plans to actually shoot anything. But after strolling through the cool air and watching the overcast weather slowly change over the course of an hour, something in the back of my mind told me that there was a chance the clouds could break just enough for the sun to shine through, even if just for a moment. So I broke off from the group, set up this shot, and waited for another hour to see if it would happen. And just like many other magical moments I’ve witnessed in this city, the light and darkness coexisted… for a few seconds. Then the sun retreated behind the clouds and the sky was flat and gray once again. It’s one of only a handful of landscape images I shot that year, and to this day it represents a few minutes of peace during an otherwise challenging and uncertain time.

The Edition

Print is open edition, currently available in the following sizes:

  • Medium (image size 10” x 14”)

  • Large (image size 15” x 21”)

All open edition prints are signed by the artist.

The Process

My prints are produced with the highest standards in mind. Rather than using traditional photo papers (such as Kodak Endura and Fujicolor Crystal) I’ve opted for premium papers from Hahnemühle and Canson. These fine art papers are Acid Free, contain no OBAs, and are typically 300gsm and higher. Over 20 papers, across 7 different manufacturers, were tested in order to find a select few to work with. Each image is custom-matched to a specific paper in order to produce prints with amazing detail, color, and depth.

All prints are made in-house using genuine archival pigment inks.

Package Includes:

  • Break On Through

  • Bonus 4x6 print of a different (open edition) image

  • Story sheet printed on translucent vellum paper

  • Small and Medium prints are packaged in a black presentation box. Large prints are (loosely) rolled into a wide shipping tube.

  • When purchasing a frame with the print (see below), the presentation box / shipping tube is not included. There is a 20% discount on frames when ordered with a print.

Framing and Mounting

Image sizes are the measurements listed above. The total paper size will be 1-inch larger (both width and height) to accommodate a half-inch border on each side. This size difference will only be relevant when framing without a mat, which is not recommended.

Matting/Framing/Mounting is not included in the price of the print; however, you may choose to add professional framing services by selecting the “Mounting And Framing” category at the top of the page. All mounting and framing is done professionally by The Frame Room in Fells Point. There is a 20% discount on frames when ordered with a print.

Whether or not you choose to include a frame at the time of purchase, I highly recommend seeking out a professional framing service. The quality of frames, and especially glass, can vary greatly when purchased retail. Also, care should be taken not to use any mounting materials that may compromise the archival nature of the paper and ink.
